A broadcast cover letter is a simple adaptation of the traditional cover letter. It is designed to be sent without a resume and acts as both an introduction to the skills that you possess and a cover letter. The following are times when it may be appropriate to use the broadcast cover letter:

In the event that you do not have a résumé, there is a good chance that you will have to fill out an application. This forces you to put your background into the format that the employer wants, rather than the package of your choosing. Because of this, it is not recommended to use a broadcast cover letter as the main focus of your job search campaign. Instead, you should use it as an essential piece of you job search operation in one of the following ways:
* As an alternative approach when your cover letter and résumé don’t create the response that you are looking for from individual target companies.
* For small, specifically aimed mailings to high-interest companies, where it can be effective as a customizing approach.
* For small, specifically aimed mailings to high-interest positions about which you have enough of a detailed understanding that such a letter would supersede the productiveness of your résumé.
* As a portion of a multiple-contact procedure in which you are contacting multiple people within a company with personalized letters.
* To submit to headhunters, who, if you possess the skill set that they are looking for, will assist you in packaging your professional experience.
* As an initial push, but with a a résumé and conventional cover letter at the ready for a supportive secondary mailing. Generally, the cold-mailed broadcast cover letter results in a request for a résumé, and other times it results in a telephone interview and a following face-to-face interview-with the request that you bring a copy of your résumé.
