Sample Broadcast Cover Letter

A broadcast cover letter is a simple adaptation of the traditional cover letter. It is designed to be sent without a resume and acts as both an introduction to the skills that you possess and a cover letter. The following are times when it may be appropriate to use the broadcast cover letter:

* Your résumé is not receiving the desired result, and you want to try a different approach while you are reconstructing it.
* Your résumé is not appropriate for the position for which you are applying.
* You do not have a résumé that is relevant to this position.

A majority of the information will be taken from your résumé, because the purpose of the broadcast letter is to take the place of a résumé as a tool to initiate conversation and a way of introducing yourself to the candidacy of an employment position. You should conduct an in-depth analysis of your background and experience as it relates to a certain target job. Bear in mind that even though a broadcast cover letter may spur a telephone conversation with an employer, it is likely that the employer will still ask for a copy of your résumé. If this occurs, make every effort to schedule an interview, and bring a copy of you résumé with you; this will buy you a little more time to customize it for the employer’s specific needs.

In the event that you do not have a résumé, there is a good chance that you will have to fill out an application. This forces you to put your background into the format that the employer wants, rather than the package of your choosing. Because of this, it is not recommended to use a broadcast cover letter as the main focus of your job search campaign. Instead, you should use it as an essential piece of you job search operation in one of the following ways:

* As an alternative approach when your cover letter and résumé don’t create the response that you are looking for from individual target companies.
* For small, specifically aimed mailings to high-interest companies, where it can be effective as a customizing approach.
* For small, specifically aimed mailings to high-interest positions about which you have enough of a detailed understanding that such a letter would supersede the productiveness of your résumé.
* As a portion of a multiple-contact procedure in which you are contacting multiple people within a company with personalized letters.
* To submit to headhunters, who, if you possess the skill set that they are looking for, will assist you in packaging your professional experience.
* As an initial push, but with a a résumé and conventional cover letter at the ready for a supportive secondary mailing. Generally, the cold-mailed broadcast cover letter results in a request for a résumé, and other times it results in a telephone interview and a following face-to-face interview-with the request that you bring a copy of your résumé.

The following is an example of a broadcast cover letter:

Dear__________:

For the past five years I have sought an increasingly successful career in the profession of medical equipment sales. The following are some of my accomplishments:

SALES

As a regional sales representative, I contributed an average of $2.5 million, or 20 percent of my company’s annual sales. I am very motivated by achievement.

MARKETING

My marketing skill set (based on a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing) assisted me to grow my sales by 20 percent in an economically strained territory, at a time when co-workers were struggling to simply maintain flat sales. My repeat business from strategic and key accounts reached an all-time high. I am persistent, detail oriented, and look for ways to provide excellent customer service at every opportunity.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Following the successes listed above, my regional model was adopted by the company to be used with sales representatives nation wide. I helped to train and provided project supervision to the entire U.S. sales team. The year following my training, sales in the U.S. showed an increase or 15 percent above the sales goal. I am a committed team player, who is motivated by the sales team’s and the company’s overall success.

The above success information was based on my priority pricing for primary customers. It is difficult for me to condense my work into a brief summary for this letter. The only way that I can envision a way for you to be able to fully analyze my credentials is for us to have a verbal conversation. I look forward to an opportunity to speak with you in person. Please call me at the following number ___________.

Yours sincerely,

John Baker
