According to Cedric Fonclare, manager at Jupiter Asset Management, while the lack of recovery in Asia weighed on some sectors, others take their game to the image of luxury sectors or aeronautical have always strong demand from emerging markets.

But the lack of recovery is not the only pitfall to avoid austerity measures and increased regulation hinder utilities sectors for the first and the banking sector for seconds.

As we enter the season of earnings announcements for the first half of 2012, many analysts expect to see a slower growth in the turnover of companies, but with some resistance from their profits. Indeed, while the global economy has slowed and volumes fell, prices of energy and raw materials also declined due to lower demand and a glut of shale gas in the United States. Until then, the interim results are consistent with expectations, although the outlook for the second half are lower. Visibility on future profits also declined, while the expected recovery of the Asian economies, such as China and India slow to materialize.

Despite this, we saw the luxury sector behave rather well out of the West, to the extent that the demand for these products continues to grow, especially in Brazil. Among the companies benefiting from this trend include Swatch, L’Oréal and LVMH. Luxury is an area that our portfolio of European equities Jupiter European Opportunities [ 1 ] is exposed.

The agrochemical industry is also in good shape, with companies robust results, as Syngenta. In the technology sector, companies BtoC as Nokia and Logitech have suffered a demand remains weak and announced profits warning. Nevertheless, BtoB oriented companies fared better. The software vendor SAP has recently become the largest company in terms of market capitalization of German stock. Sectors that are less well behaved and we are more cautious are those in which we have seen companies fold. Telefónica in Spain, for example, could be forced to separate from her best assets in Latin America to strengthen its finances, since its domestic market remains weak. The company has suspended the payment of dividends, which in the past was the main reason for the hold portfolio. Its stock has lost to almost 30% during the first half of the year, before rebounding to finish at 30 June 2012, a decrease of 22%, according to Bloomberg.

Finally, another area that we could encounter difficulties is that of utilities, subject to policy interventions such as tax increases or elimination of subsidies, reflecting the austerity measures. Banks are also in a period of decline, as the regulation imposed on them increases due to the financial crisis and the pressures increase to reduce their debt and consolidate their capital. Their stock prices may appear to be cheap, but we see little reason to hold in the portfolio at the moment.
